Batchelor Hill facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Batchelor Hill is a well-known hill that stands tall near the city of Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada. It reaches a height of about 733 meters (2,405 feet) above sea level. This hill is located just northwest of Kamloops and north of the Brocklehurst area.

Batchelor Hill gives its name to the nearby Batchelor Hills and the Batchelor Heights neighborhood. It's also part of a smaller group of hills called the Batchelor Range. This range stretches north from the hill, along the edge of the Kamloops Plateau.

Why is it Called Batchelor Hill?

The name "Batchelor Hill" came about in the early 1900s. It was named after a man named Owen Salisbury Batchelor. Before that, the hill was sometimes called "Le Petit Garcon Salisbury." This French name meant "The Little Boy Salisbury." It was named after the person who managed the horse ranch for the Hudson's Bay Company (HBC) in that area.

Owen Batchelor's Story

Owen Batchelor was a farmer who lived in the Salmon River valley in 1885. About ten years later, he moved to Kamloops. He worked there for a while.

Later, Owen Batchelor became interested in the Klondike Gold Rush. This was a time when many people went to the Yukon to search for gold. After his adventures, he came back to the Kamloops area.

He then started several mining projects. He even built a special mill, called a stamp mill, near these hills. A stamp mill was used to crush rocks to find valuable minerals inside them. Owen Batchelor passed away in 1933.
