Bathytoma agnata is a type of sea snail. It's a marine gastropod (which means "stomach-foot") mollusk that belongs to the family called Borsoniidae. These snails live in the ocean.

What Does It Look Like?

This snail's shell can be anywhere from about 17 mm to 38 mm long. That's roughly the size of a small button to a large marble.

Shell Shape and Color

The shell is strong and shaped like a spindle, which means it's wider in the middle and tapers at both ends. It has a cone-like shape. Each part of the shell, called a whorl, has a noticeable angle in the middle. This angle often has small bumps, like tiny beads.

The shell usually has eight whorls. The very first part of the shell, called the protoconch, is smooth and dome-shaped. The main color of the shell is a light cream. Inside the opening, called the aperture, you might see a faint purple color.

Shell Details

The shell has interesting textures, which scientists call "sculpture." There are small folds near the top of each whorl. Along the angled part, there are prominent, widely spaced bumps. Below this angled part, there are fine, raised spiral lines that go all the way to the tip of the shell. These lines can sometimes be bumpy where they cross the other textures.

The opening of the shell is narrow. The outer lip has a deep curve near the angled part of the shell. The inner part of the shell's opening, called the columella, is wide and thick.

Where Does It Live?

This marine snail is found only in Australia. It lives off the coasts of Queensland and New South Wales. Scientists have found several of these snails in deep waters, around 250 fathoms (which is about 457 meters or 1,500 feet) below the surface.
