Batalla del puente de Alcolea (1868)
Battle of Alcolea

The Battle of Alcolea was an important fight that happened on September 28, 1868. It took place over a bridge in the town of Alcolea, near Córdoba, Spain. This battle was a big moment in Spanish history.

In this battle, a group of revolutionary forces fought against the government's army. The revolutionary forces were led by General Francisco Serrano. The Queen's forces were commanded by General Manuel Pavía. General Serrano's side won the battle. This victory forced Queen Isabella II of Spain to leave Spain and go into exile in France.

Why the Battle Happened

Before the battle, Queen Isabella II was ruling Spain. During her reign, one political group, the Moderate Party, held almost all the power. They controlled the government for a long time.

Other political groups, like the Progressive Party and the Democratic Party, wanted to change this. They felt it was unfair for one party to have so much control. In 1866, these parties made an agreement called the Ostend Agreement. In this agreement, they decided to work together to remove Queen Isabella II from her throne. This agreement set the stage for the revolution and the Battle of Alcolea.
