The Battle of Big Mound was a clash between soldiers and Native American groups. The U.S. Army was on an expedition in the area. They met the Sioux groups near a large hill, which is how the battle got its name. The fighting was intense, but the U.S. Army eventually won.

After the battle, official reports shared the numbers of people affected. About 80 Native American people were either hurt or died during the fighting. For the U.S. Army, there were fewer casualties. Three soldiers were killed, and four others were wounded. This means a total of seven U.S. soldiers were hurt or died.
