The Battle of Cerro del Borrego was an important fight that happened on June 13, 1862. It took place near the city of Orizaba in Veracruz, Mexico. This battle was part of the Second French intervention in Mexico, a time when France tried to set up an empire in Mexico.

In this battle, the Mexican republican army, led by General Jesús Gonzalez Ortega, fought against troops from the Second Mexican Empire. The Second Mexican Empire was supported by French forces.

What Happened Before the Battle?

General González Ortega's troops were on their way to join General Ignacio Zaragoza's army. General Zaragoza was a famous Mexican general. Before joining him, General Ortega received special orders.

His mission was to travel through a place called Perote. From there, he needed to reach the northern part of Orizaba. His goal was to take control of an important hill called Cerro del Borrego, which was close to Orizaba.

The Battle Begins

The battle happened on the night of June 14, 1862. During the night, a part of the Mexican army, known as the Zacatecas division, was discovered by the French troops. The French forces attacked them.

The Zacatecas division was forced to leave its position. They had to retreat, meaning they had to pull back from the fight. This battle was a victory for the Mexican Empire and the French forces.
