The Battle of Dhala was a small but important event that happened in March 1965. It was part of a bigger conflict called the Aden Emergency. This emergency was a time of fighting in a place called Aden, which is now part of Yemen. The battle took place near the town of Dhala.

What Was the Aden Emergency?

The Aden Emergency was a period of unrest and fighting in the British colony of Aden. This area is now part of modern-day Yemen. The conflict lasted from 1963 to 1967. It involved British forces and local groups who wanted independence.

Why Was Dhala Important?

Dhala was a key location near the border with Yemen. It was important for controlling the area. British forces were working to build and secure roads there. These roads helped them move supplies and soldiers.

Building the Dhala Road

In April 1965, British Army engineers were busy building the Dhala Road. This road was very important for moving around the area. Two groups of engineers were working together. They were 300 Parachute Squadron and 24 Field Squadron. Both were part of the 131 Parachute Engineer Regiment.

The Attack on the Engineers

On the night of April 12, 1965, something unexpected happened. While the engineers were working, they were attacked. The attack happened at a place called Al-Milah. This spot was very close to the border with Yemen. The attackers were guerrillas, who are fighters using surprise attacks.

Casualties and Bravery

During the attack, some soldiers were sadly killed or wounded. Squadron Sergeant Major (SSM) John Lonergan was one of those killed. He was from 300 Squadron. Sergeant Atfield, who was the pay sergeant for 24 Field Squadron, also lost his life. Both men are buried in a cemetery in Yemen.

Major Clive Samuel was the doctor for the regiment. He showed incredible bravery during the attack. He risked his own life to help the wounded soldiers. He even rescued two men who were badly hurt and stuck in the open. For his courage, Major Samuel was given an award called the MBE. He was even considered for a higher award, the Military Cross.

Honoring a Hero

SSM John Lonergan is remembered as a hero. He is believed to be the first soldier from the Territorial Army to be killed in action since World War II. A military base is named after him. It is called Lonergan Lines. This honors his sacrifice and bravery.
