The Battle of Egan Station was a small fight that happened in August 1860. It took place near Schellbourne, Nevada. This event was part of the larger American Indian Wars, which involved conflicts between Native American tribes and the United States.
What Happened at Egan Station?
The fight involved about 80 Paiute warriors. They attacked a Pony Express station in Egan Canyon. The Paiutes were looking for food. The two station workers gave them some food they had. However, the Paiute chief wanted more bread to be baked.
Soldiers Arrive
While this was happening, a Pony Express rider was coming towards the station. He saw the situation and quickly turned around. He rode back to find a group of soldiers he had passed earlier. These soldiers were from the 4th U.S. Artillery. They were led by Lieutenant Stephen H. Weed.
Lieutenant Weed and his soldiers rushed to Egan Station. They arrived just as the Paiute warriors were threatening the station workers.
The Fight and Its Outcome
A battle quickly started. Lieutenant Weed's soldiers fought to free the workers. They managed to rescue the captives. The Native warriors were forced to leave.
In the fight, three Paiute warriors were killed. About 12 others were wounded. The soldiers also had losses. Two soldiers were wounded, and one later died from his injuries. The battle ended with a victory for the U.S. forces.
