Schellbourne is a fascinating ghost town located in White Pine County, Nevada. It sits in the Schell Creek Range, about 43 miles (69 km) north of Ely. This historic spot was once known as Fort Schellbourne and Schell Creek Station.

Schellbourne was an important stop along several famous routes. These included the Central Overland Route, the Pony Express, and the original path of the Lincoln Highway. Today, it is recognized as Nevada Historical Marker number 51. The site was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1972, marking it as a special place in American history.

The Story of Schellbourne

Schellbourne has a rich past, starting long before it became a town. It was named after Major A. J. Schell. He was a military leader in charge of protecting the mail routes.

Early Beginnings

The area where Schellbourne stands was first a village for the Shoshone Indian people. In 1859, it became a stop for the Overland Stage and Mail service. A year later, in 1860, it became a station for the famous Pony Express. Back then, it was called Schell Creek Station.

In 1861, the Overland Telegraph line reached Schellbourne. This brought faster communication to the area. For a short time in 1862, it was known as Fort Schellbourne. This was when soldiers camped there to protect the stagecoaches and mail from attacks.

A Mining Town Emerges

In the 1870s, Schellbourne transformed into a busy mining town. About 500 people lived and worked there. The Schellbourne post office opened in December 1871. It served the community for many years, finally closing in October 1925.

Decline and Revival

The town's importance lessened after the Central Pacific Railroad was finished in 1869. This new railroad was built further north. However, Schellbourne saw a new burst of life in 1871. This happened when gold was discovered nearby, turning it back into a lively mining camp.

Schellbourne Today

Today, Schellbourne is a well-preserved ghost town. It is located on a private ranch. Its history is honored as Nevada Historical Marker 51. It stands as a reminder of the Old West and the important routes that once crossed the country.
