Yashwantrao Holkar | Gerard Lake |
The Battle of Farrukhabad was an important fight that happened on November 14, 1804. It was part of the Second Anglo-Maratha War, a big conflict in India. This battle was fought between the forces of the British East India Company and the army of Yashwantrao Holkar, a powerful leader from the Maratha Empire.
The Battle of Farrukhabad
This battle took place in a city called Farrukhabad, which is in what is now Uttar Pradesh, India. The British East India Company was a powerful trading company that also had its own army. Their forces were led by a general named Gerard Lake.
A Surprise Attack
General Lake's soldiers marched very quickly for more than 60 miles (about 96 kilometers) in just 24 hours. This fast march allowed them to surprise Holkar's forces. The British attacked the Maratha camp while many soldiers were still sleeping. They were resting after celebrating the night before.
Holkar's Escape and Maratha Victory
During the surprise attack, Yashwantrao Holkar himself almost got captured. However, he managed to escape at the last moment. Even though the British launched a surprise attack, the battle ended with a victory for the Maratha Empire. The British forces were defeated and had to retreat.
