The Battle of Kororāreka was an important fight in New Zealand. It happened on March 11, 1845. This battle was between Māori warriors and the British Army. Kororāreka is now called Russell. It is a small town on the North Island of New Zealand. The Māori people were upset about things happening in the town. They showed their anger by cutting down the British flag pole.

Why the Battle Started
The Māori kept cutting down the British flag pole. Each time, the British Army put it back up. This happened three times. When the British put the flag pole up a fourth time, the Māori decided to attack the town. This led to the big battle.
Who Fought in the Battle
Two brave Māori leaders were Hōne Heke and Te Ruki Kawiti. The British soldiers were led by William Hulme. The Māori had many more fighters. There were about 600 Māori warriors. The British only had about 140 soldiers.
What Happened in the Battle
The Māori won the battle. The fighting caused a lot of damage. The town of Kororāreka was destroyed. After the battle, the British Army left the town. All the British people living there also left. British and American ships in the harbour helped them. They took everyone to Auckland for safety.
