What was the Battle of Lutos?
In 794, the Emir of Cordoba, Hisham I, sent his armies to attack the Kingdom of Asturias. These armies were led by two brothers, Abd al-Karim ibn Abd al-Walid ibn Mugaith and Abd al-Malik ibn Abd al-Walid ibn Mugaith.
The Battle Begins
Abd al-Karim led his army to attack the lands of Álava. He used a "scorched earth" tactic, which means destroying everything in their path. Meanwhile, his brother Abd al-Malik marched his forces deep into the Asturian Kingdom.
They didn't face much resistance, except around the town of Oviedo. Abd al-Malik's army destroyed many farms and even churches built by King Fruela I of Asturias.
The Ambush
As the Muslim army headed back to Al-Andalus, they traveled through the valley of Camino Real del Puerto de la Mesa. Here, King Alfonso II of Asturias and his army surprised them.
The Asturian forces ambushed the Muslim army in a part of the valley near Grado, Asturias. Historians believe this area was around a place called Los Lodos. The Asturian army fought bravely.
Asturian Victory
The battle ended with a big victory for the Asturians. Most of the invading Muslim army was defeated. Their leader, Abd al-Malik, was killed during the fight.
What happened after the battle?
After this big defeat, Emir Hisham I sent another army the next year. This new army was led by his brother, Abd al-Karim ibn Abd al-Walid ibn Mugaith. This time, the Muslim army defeated the Asturian army in battles like the Battle of Las Babias. They even managed to take over Oviedo for a short time. However, when winter came in 795-796, the Muslim troops went back home.
