The Battle of Suzdal was an important fight that happened on July 7, 1445. It is also sometimes called the Battle of the Kamenka River. This battle was part of a bigger conflict between the Russians and the Tatar people.
The fight took place near the city of Suzdal. It involved the Russian forces, led by their ruler Vasily II, and Tatar troops. These Tatar troops were part of the army of Oluğ Möxämmäd, who had invaded the area around Nizhny Novgorod.
What Happened at Suzdal?
During the battle, the Russian army was defeated by the Tatar forces. The Tatar troops were led by a commander named Mäxmüd. After this victory, Mäxmüd became a very important leader, known as Mäxmüd of Kazan.
A major event of the battle was that Vasily II, the Russian ruler, was captured. He was only set free after a very large payment was made. This payment was a huge amount of money, about 200,000 roubles.
Vasily II also agreed to give back some lands known as Mishar Yurt. These lands had been bought from another leader, Tokhtamysh, in 1343.
After the battle, a new state called the Qasim Khanate was created in this area. It acted like a "buffer state," meaning it was a neutral zone between two larger powers. Over time, the Qasim Khanate became a close ally and a "vassal" (a state that owes loyalty) to Muscovy.
