The Bavand dynasty was an ancient Iranian family of rulers. They ruled for about 700 years in a region called Tabaristan. This area is on the southern shore of the Caspian Sea. The dynasty started in the early 7th century. Its name comes from Bav, also known as Farrukhzad. He ruled from 651 to 665. Bav was from a noble family called Ispahbudhan. This family served the Sasanian Empire. The Bavandid rulers were first Zoroastrian. Later, they became Muslims during the time of Qarin I.
