What Happened to Bayfield?

Bayfield was a small community that existed for a short time. It was located in the state of Missouri, which is in the central part of the United States. Like many small towns, Bayfield eventually disappeared. This often happens when people move away, or when important services like the post office close down.

Where Was Bayfield Located?

Bayfield was situated in the southwestern corner of DeKalb County. It was near a small river called the Little Third Fork of the Platte River. The town was about three miles southwest of a place called Clarksdale. It was also very close to the border between DeKalb County and Buchanan County.

How Did Bayfield Begin?

Bayfield started around the year 1880. This was when the Chicago, Rock Island, and Pacific Railway built its train tracks through that area. Often, new towns would grow up along railway lines because trains made it easier to transport goods and people.

A post office was opened in Bayfield in 1886. A post office was very important for any town at that time. It allowed people to send and receive mail, which was the main way to communicate over long distances. The Bayfield post office stayed open for many years, but it finally closed in 1917. After the post office closed, the town slowly faded away.
