Bazarak is an important city in Afghanistan. It is the main city, or capital, of Panjshir Province. You can find it in the beautiful Panjshir Valley in northeastern Afghanistan.
Bazarak is a small city. In 2015, about 24,723 people lived there. The city is divided into three smaller areas. It covers about 9,122 hectares of land. There are 2,747 homes in Bazarak. The city is made up of six villages. These villages are Khanez, Jangalak, Malaspa, Parandeh, and Rahmankhel. The resting place of Ahmad Shah Massoud is also in Bazarak. He was a famous leader known as the "Lion of Panjshir."
History of Bazarak City
Bazarak has an interesting history. From 1996 to 2001, a group called the Taliban ruled Afghanistan. During this time, Bazarak and the Panjshir Valley were very important. They were a strong base for a group called the Northern Alliance. This group was against the Taliban. Their leader was Ahmad Shah Massoud, who was from Bazarak.
Bazarak is seen as an "Urban Village." This means it has both city-like and village-like features. Homes, schools, and farms are built close to the Panjshir River. About 30% of the developed land is used for important buildings. However, most of the land in Bazarak (about 84%) is empty or barren.
In 2021, there was a big event in Afghanistan. The Taliban took control of many areas. But Bazarak was the only provincial capital that did not fall to the Taliban right away. It became the main place for a group called the National Resistance Front of Afghanistan. However, the Taliban later said they had captured the city on September 5, 2021.
On September 6, 2021, a Taliban spokesperson announced they had taken control of all of Panjshir Valley. Pictures showed Taliban fighters in front of the governor's building. They even raised their flag there. But the National Resistance Front said this was not entirely true. They claimed that 60% of the province was still under their control. Reporters who visited Panjshir later also saw fighters from both sides. This showed that the National Resistance Front was still active near Bazarak. In August 2022, the National Resistance Front started a new effort. They said they took control of seven villages in the area.
