Bear Creek is a small community in Chatham County, North Carolina, in the United States. Bear Creek is home to Chatham Central High School, which is one of the high schools in Chatham County. History
Bear Creek was first known by a different name: Richmond. It was named after Richard Jones, who started a business there in 1885.
Early settlers in the area often formed churches, which were important gathering places. The Baptist faith was one of the first to organize churches and build meeting houses in Chatham County. One of the oldest Baptist groups in America, the Sandy Creek Association, was formed in 1758. Many early churches in North Carolina, including some in Chatham County, were part of this group. The Bear Creek church was established in 1787.
