Discovering Bear Pond

Where is Bear Pond?

Bear Pond is found in Hancock County, Maine. It's very close to the border of Washington County, less than half a mile away. If you look southeast from the top of Lead Mountain, you'll find the pond about one mile away. It's also about 1.2 miles northwest of Maine State Route 9, near the town of Beddington. An unpaved road that leads to the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine passes very close to the eastern side of the pond.

Water Flow: In and Out

The main source of water for Bear Pond is a stream called Bear Brook. This brook collects water from the southeastern slopes of Lead Mountain. This area is part of a special place called the Bear Brook Watershed in Maine (BBWM), which is an experimental forest. Scientists study the environment here. There are even special tools, called USGS stream gauges, that measure the water in Bear Brook. Water leaves Bear Pond from its western end, flowing into the Little Narraguagus River. This river then joins the larger Narraguagus River.

The Surrounding Area

Bear Pond is nestled within a thick forest. The land around it, especially the Bear Brook Watershed, is used for important environmental research. Scientists learn about how forests and water systems work together in this natural setting. It's a quiet place where nature thrives.
