The Beardsley–Mix House is a very old and special house in West Hartford, Connecticut. It was built around 1774. This makes it one of the few buildings from the 1700s still standing in the town.

The house was not always in its current spot. It used to be on South Main Street. In the 1930s, it was carefully moved to where it is now. Because of its age and history, the Beardsley–Mix House was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1986. This list helps protect important historical places in the United States.

What Does the House Look Like?

The Beardsley–Mix House is located on Rockledge Drive. This is a street near South Main Street in West Hartford. It is a two-and-a-half-story house. It is made of wood and has a roof that slopes down on two sides.

Key Features of the House

  • Central Chimney: The house has a large chimney right in the middle. This was common for houses built a long time ago.
  • Wood Siding: The outside of the house is covered with wooden boards called clapboards.
  • Front Entrance: The main front of the house faces north. It has five windows across the front. The second floor sticks out a little bit over the first floor.
  • Front Door: The front door is in the center. It has narrow windows on either side. There are also decorative columns next to the door. These columns hold up a fancy frame above the door.

A Look Back at the House's History

This historic house was likely built around 1774. The land it stood on was first owned by Noah Webster Sr. He was the father of the famous Noah Webster, who created the first American dictionary. Noah Webster Sr. sold the land to Adam Webster in 1774.

Who Lived Here?

  • Elisha Mix: In 1810, Elisha Mix bought the house and its farmland.
  • Jeremiah Beardslee: Later, Elisha Mix sold the property to Jeremiah Beardslee.
  • Henry Mix: After Jeremiah Beardslee passed away, his son-in-law, Henry Mix, took over the property. This is how the "Beardsley–Mix" name came about.

Moving the House

In the 1930s, the farmland around the house was divided into smaller pieces. At that time, the house was moved from South Main Street. It was placed further back on its current spot. The Beardsley–Mix House is very important because it is one of the few houses left in West Hartford from the 1700s. It helps us remember what the town was like a long time ago.
