Who Was Beatrice II?
Beatrice was born in 1193. She was the younger sister of Countess Joanna I of Burgundy. Her family, the Hohenstaufens, were very important rulers in Europe during the Middle Ages. They controlled large areas and had a lot of influence.
Becoming a Countess
When her father, Otto I, died in 1200, Beatrice became the next in line to rule the County of Burgundy. This was a significant region in what is now France. Her sister Joanna I ruled for a few years. After Joanna's death in 1205, Beatrice officially became the Countess Palatine of Burgundy. Her uncle, Philip of Swabia, who was the German king at the time, made sure that Beatrice would inherit her family's lands and title.
