Joan I (born 1191, died 1205) was an important ruler in the Middle Ages. She was also known as Joanna of Hohenstaufen. Joan was the Countess of Burgundy from the year 1200 until her death in 1205.

Joan was the daughter of Otto I, Count of Burgundy, and Margaret, Countess of Blois.

Becoming a Countess

Joan was born in 1191. She became the Countess of Burgundy when she was very young, around nine years old. This happened because her father, Otto I, was sadly killed in Besançon in the year 1200.

Her Time as Ruler

Joan ruled the County of Burgundy for about five years. This was a time when many areas were ruled by powerful families. Even though she was young, she held the title of Countess.

The End of Her Reign

Joan I passed away in 1205. After her death, her younger sister, Beatrice II, took over as the Countess of Burgundy.
