Beatriz Bernal (born between 1501 and 1504, died around 1563) was an important Spanish writer. She wrote a famous book called Cristalián de España. She was one of the first women in Spain to make a living as a writer.
Her Life
Beatriz Bernal was born in Valladolid, Spain, between 1501 and 1504. Her family was quite wealthy. She was married twice and became a widow both times. To support herself, she rented out rooms in her home. She passed away around 1563.
Her Work
In 1537, Beatriz Bernal asked the royal court for permission to print her book. This book was her only known work, a type of story called a chivalric romance. These stories were popular tales about brave knights and their adventures. Her book was titled Cristalián de España.
The full title was very long: Historia de los invictos y magnánimos caballeros don Cristalián de España, príncipe de Trapisonda, y del infante Luzescanio, su hermano, hijos del famosísimo emperador Londelec de Trapisonda.
Her book was finally published in 1545. It was printed under a fake name, and she dedicated it to Philip II of Spain, who later became king. In her story, Bernal created many different female characters. She gave them more power and importance than was usual in these types of books.
Cristalián de España was special because it was the first chivalric romance written by a woman. It might even be the only one ever written by a woman. The book was so popular that it was translated into Italian and published in 1558.
After Beatriz Bernal died, her daughter, Juana de Gatos, had the book reprinted. This time, it was published with Beatriz Bernal's real name on it. This made Beatriz Bernal known as the first professional woman writer in Spain, even though it happened after her death.
