A Glimpse into the Past
One of the most interesting homes at the site is the Josiah Bell House. This was the home of Josiah Fisher Bell. He was known as a Confederate spy during the American Civil War. This was a time when many people in Beaufort had different ideas about which side to support. About 40% of the town's people supported the Union, while others supported the Confederacy. Josiah Bell gathered information for the Confederate side.
