What is the History of Belén de Umbría?
The name "Belén" means "Bethlehem" in Spanish. A bishop visited this area in 1902. He thought the place looked like a manger, which is a feeding trough for animals, like the one where baby Jesus was born in Bethlehem. So, he suggested the name "Belén."
The second part of the name, "Umbría," honors the Umbra people. They were an important native tribe who lived in this region a long time ago. The town was officially started on August 10, 1890.
