History of Belleville
Early Settlers and Community Life
The first Amish families came to the Belleville area around 1791. Mennonites arrived shortly after them. These two groups make up a large part of the local population today.
Most local Amish people use horse-drawn buggies for travel. The color of their buggy tops can tell you which church group they belong to. Some Amish churches in the area do allow members to drive cars.
Local Attractions and Famous People
Every Wednesday, Belleville hosts a popular auction. You can find fresh produce grown by local farmers. There are also delicious homemade baked goods and farm animals for sale. A fun flea market happens at the same time.
Children in Belleville go to schools in the Mifflin County School District.
Belleville is also the birthplace of Darle Esh. He was a world champion in horseshoe pitching. He was ranked among the top 3% of players globally!
