Belmont, also known as the Ficklin Mansion, is an old house in Charlottesville, Virginia. It was built around 1820 for a man named John Winn. The builder was John Jordan, a brick mason who worked with Thomas Jefferson.
The house originally had a main section in the middle. It also had two smaller sections on each side. Around 1840, John Winn's son, Benjamin Bannister Winn, added a second floor to these side sections.
Belmont is a brick house that shows two building styles. These are Greek Revival and Federal styles. It was built when builders were changing from one style to the other. The house has a fancy entrance called a portico. This entrance has a triangular roof supported by four square columns.
What is the History of Belmont?
In 1847, the large property (551 acres) was sold. It was bought by Slaughter Ficklin. He renamed the estate "Belmont" from its original name, "Belle-mont." Ficklin turned it into a famous horse farm.
Later, in 1890, the big property was divided into smaller pieces. This area is now known as the Belmont neighborhood in Charlottesville. Today, the main house itself has been divided into several apartments.
