The Belton Depot is a special old building in Belton, South Carolina. It was built around 1910 by the Southern Railway company. This building is so important that it was added to the National Historic Register on August 13, 1979. It used to be called the Southern Railway Combined Depot. Before it was built, the railway used several smaller buildings.
A Busy Hub for Belton
The Belton Depot was a very important place. It was right near the town square in Belton, South Carolina. This made it a central spot for the whole area.
Trains used to carry people and goods. But in the 1960s, fewer people rode trains. Also, less freight was shipped by rail. Because of this, the railway company stopped using the depot. The city of Belton then took over the building.
In 1983, the depot was fixed up. Part of the building became a branch of the Anderson County Library. This gave the old train station a new purpose for the community.
From Library to Museum
In 2001, the Belton Area Museum Association took ownership of the depot. The library moved to a new building in 2004. After that, a big project began. For three years, people worked hard to raise money. They also fixed up and updated the building.
This renovation finished in 2006. The depot then became home to two exciting museums. One is the Ruth Drake Museum. The other is the South Carolina Tennis Hall of Fame Museum. Now, this historic building teaches visitors about local history and tennis!
