Belén Ruiz de Gopegui Durán was born in 1963 in Madrid, Spain. She is a Spanish novelist and screenwriter. This means she writes books and also scripts for movies.

Her Family Background
Belén Gopegui's mother was Margarita Durán Suárez. She helped start Amnesty International in Spain. This is a group that works to protect human rights around the world.
Her father was Luis Ruiz de Gopegui. He was a scientist who studied space, called an aerospace scientist. He was one of the few Spanish experts in astrophysics during his time.
Her Writing Career
Belén Gopegui started writing professionally by contributing to literary sections. In 1993, she published her first novel, La escala de los mapas. This book won two awards for new writers. These were the Premio Tigre Juan and the Premio Iberoamericano Santiago del Nuevo Extremo.
Two years later, her book La conquista del aire was made into a movie. The movie was called Las razones de mis amigos. Belén Gopegui helped write the movie script herself. She also wrote screenplays for other movies like La suerte dormida and El principio de Arquímedes.
Her novel Lo real was a finalist for three different awards. These were the Premio de la Crítica 2001, Premio Fundación José Manuel Lara de Novela 2002, and XIII Premio Rómulo Gallegos 2003. In 2010, her novel Deseo de ser punk won the Dulce Chacón prize.
From 2011 to 2017, she published three more novels. These books explored how the internet connects people. They also looked at how individuals can act and make choices in a connected world. These novels were Acceso no autorizado, El comité de la noche, and Quédate este día y esta noche conmigo.
In March 2019, she gave a talk called Ella pisó la luna. Ellas pisaron la luna. This talk honored women whose achievements have not been widely recognized yet. In 2021, she published another novel titled Existiríamos el mar.
Writing for Young Readers
Belén Gopegui has also written many stories for children. Some of her children's books include El balonazo, El amigo que surgió de un viejo ordenador, and Mi misión era acercarme a Miranda.
