Early Life and Career
Ben Albritton grew up in Lakeland, Florida. He went to Florida Southern College. In 1990, he earned a degree in citrus. After college, he joined his family's citrus grove business. He worked with his brother and uncle.
Albritton was a board member for the Peace River Valley Citrus Growers Association from 2002 to 2007. In 2005, Governor Jeb Bush chose him to join the Florida Citrus Commission. He served there until 2010. During this time, he was also the chairman from 2007 to 2010. He also served on the East Charlotte County Drainage District board.
Serving in the Florida House of Representatives
In 2010, State Representative Baxter Troutman could not run for re-election. This was because of term limits. Ben Albritton decided to run for the 66th District seat. This district included Hardee, southern Polk, and northwestern Highlands counties.
Albritton won the Republican primary election with 79% of the votes. In the main election, he won with 99% of the votes. He was elected to the Florida House of Representatives.
In 2012, Florida's legislative districts were changed. Albritton then represented the 56th District. This new district covered much of the same area as his previous one. He ran for re-election without any opponents. He won his second term easily. In 2014, he was re-elected for his third term without any opposition.
Serving in the Florida Senate
Albritton was elected to the Florida Senate in 2018. As a state senator, he helps make laws for Florida.
In 2022, Albritton supported a bill called Senate Bill 2508. This bill was about how water from Lake Okeechobee should be used. Some people were concerned that it would give more water to farms. They worried this might harm the Everglades ecosystem. The bill was approved by the Florida Legislature. However, Governor Ron DeSantis did not sign it into law. He used his veto power to stop it.
Ben Albritton is the Senate President for the 2024-2026 term. This means he leads the Florida Senate.
