Ben Albritton (born August 17, 1968) is a Republican politician. He is currently a member of the Florida Senate. Before that, he was a member of the Florida House of Representatives. He represented areas like DeSoto County, Hardee County, and parts of Polk County from 2010 to 2018.
Early Life and Work
Ben Albritton was born in Lakeland. He went to Florida Southern College. In 1990, he earned a degree related to citrus farming. After college, he joined his family's citrus grove business. He worked with his brother and uncle.
Albritton also helped lead the Peace River Valley Citrus Growers Association. He was on their board from 2002 to 2007. In 2005, Governor Jeb Bush chose him to join the Florida Citrus Commission. This group helps the citrus industry in Florida. He served there until 2010 and was even the chairman for a few years. He also served on a local drainage board.
Serving in the Florida House
In 2010, Ben Albritton decided to run for the Florida House of Representatives. This is a group of elected officials who make laws for Florida. He ran for the 66th District. He won the Republican primary election with a large number of votes. Then, he won the general election easily.
In 2012, the areas that representatives served were changed. Albritton then ran for the 56th District. He faced no opponents in either the primary or general elections. This meant he won his second term without anyone running against him. He was also re-elected for his third term in 2014 without opposition.
Serving in the Florida Senate
In 2018, Ben Albritton was elected to the Florida Senate. This is another group of elected officials who make laws for Florida, similar to the House but with fewer members.
In 2022, Albritton supported a bill called Senate Bill 2508. This bill was about how water from Lake Okeechobee should be used. Some people who care about fishing and the environment were worried about it. They felt it might give too much water to farms instead of protecting the Everglades. Even though the Florida Legislature approved the bill, Governor Ron DeSantis decided to stop it. He used his veto power, which means he rejected the bill.
Ben Albritton is set to become the President of the Florida Senate for the 2024-2026 term. This is a very important leadership role in the Senate. He has raised money to support his political campaigns.
