History of Ben Arnold

The story of Ben Arnold began in 1890. It started as a stop along the San Antonio and Aransas Pass Railway. The community got its name from a special little girl. Her name was Bennie Arnold, and she was just three years old. She was the mascot on the very first train that arrived at the new station.

A local post office opened in Ben Arnold in 1892. By 1896, the community was growing. It had three churches and a school. About 125 people lived there at that time.

In 1903, the school in Ben Arnold had two teachers. They taught around eighty students. The community kept growing. By the 1920s, the population reached about 250 people. This number stayed pretty steady for many years.

However, by the late 1960s, the population dropped to 148. The Ben Arnold school system joined with the Cameron Independent School District in the early 1970s. This meant students from Ben Arnold would go to school in Cameron.

In 1977, the railway track that connected Ben Arnold to other towns was no longer used. Even with these changes, Ben Arnold still had 148 residents and several businesses in 1990. The population stayed the same in 2000.
