Ben Buckler, New South Wales facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Ben Buckler is a special spot in the eastern suburbs of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It's like a small neighborhood that's part of the bigger area called North Bondi. It's managed by the Waverley Council, which is like the local government for that area. People sometimes call it "the northern headland of Bondi Bay," which means it's the piece of land that sticks out into the ocean at the northern end of famous Bondi Beach.

Ben Buckler is home to some important historical sites. One is the Ben Buckler Gun Battery, which is a very old military fort built in 1892. It was buried underground for a long time, then dug up, and then buried again! Another important site is the Bondi Sewer Vent, which is also a heritage-listed structure, meaning it's protected because of its historical importance.

How Ben Buckler Got Its Name

The name "Ben Buckler" was first written down in 1831. It was used to describe a piece of land given to someone named Richard Hurd in North Bondi. No one is completely sure how the name came about, but there are a few interesting ideas:

  • Some people think it was named after a convict (a prisoner sent to Australia long ago) called Benjamin Buckler or Ben Buckley. They say he lived with the Aboriginal people in the area around 1810.
  • Another idea is that a bushranger (a type of outlaw or bandit in early Australia) named Ben Buckley lived in a cave near Bondi Beach.
  • A man named Obed West, who lived a long time ago (from 1807 to 1891), believed that the name "Ben Buckler" came from an Aboriginal word that changed over time.
