During his time in the Senate, he represented people living in Hoke and Cumberland counties. He was also a leader for the Democratic Party in the Senate.

In September 2021, Ben Clark shared that he would not run for re-election in 2022. Later, in November 2021, he announced his plan to run for a seat in the United States Congress.
