The Ben Uri Gallery & Museum is a special art museum in London, England. It's known for showing art and telling the stories of artists who came to London from other countries. The museum calls itself "The Art Museum for Everyone," welcoming people from all backgrounds.
Its website lets you explore the museum's art collection. This collection shows how Jewish and immigrant artists have contributed to British art since the 1900s. You can also find lists of past exhibitions, a digital archive, and even podcasts about art.
The Story of Ben Uri
The Ben Uri Art Society started in 1915 in the East End of London. An artist from Russia named Lazar Berson created it. At that time, many immigrant artists and craftspeople found it hard to join regular art groups. Ben Uri gave them a place to share their art and connect with others.
The society was inspired by the Bezalel School in Jerusalem, which had started a few years earlier. It was named after Bezalel Ben Uri, a skilled craftsman from the Bible who helped build the Ark of the Covenant.
In 2001, the charity was relaunched with a new name: Ben Uri Gallery and Museum. Since 2002, it has been located in St. John's Wood, London.
What Art Can You See?
The museum has a permanent collection of about 1,300 artworks. These pieces show the history of Jewish and immigrant artists in Britain. The museum is looking for a bigger place in central London to display all its art.
Its current location is mainly used for temporary exhibitions. These special shows focus on different themes or artists. For example, they have featured artists from the "Whitechapel Boys" group, explored how the Crucifixion symbol has been used in art, and showcased works by important artists like Judy Chicago.
Recent Art Shows
In June 2017, the museum opened an exhibition called Art Out of the Bloodlands: A Century of Polish Artists in Britain. This show highlighted the works of Polish artists who came to live and work in Britain over the last 100 years.
