Benjamin Horace Weese, often called Ben, was born in 1929 in Evanston, Illinois. He is an American architect from Chicago. Ben Weese is known for being part of a special group of architects called the Chicago Seven. His older brother, Harry Weese, was also a famous architect in Chicago.
Becoming an Architect
Ben Weese studied architecture at Harvard University, earning both his bachelor's and master's degrees. He also received a special certificate from the École des Beaux-Arts in Fontainebleau, France. This school is famous for its traditional art and architecture training.
Starting His Career
In 1957, Ben Weese returned to Chicago. He joined his older brother's company, Harry Weese Associates. This firm focused on projects like urban renewal, which means rebuilding and improving city areas. They also worked on subsidized housing, which provides affordable homes for people.
The Chicago Seven
In the late 1970s, Ben Weese became a member of the Chicago Seven. This was a group of architects who had new ideas about design. They disagreed with the very strict rules of modern architecture, especially how it was used in Chicago. They wanted more creativity and variety in building design.
Weese's Own Firm
In 1977, Ben Weese started his own architecture company. It was called Weese Seegers Hickey Weese, and he opened it with his wife. This firm quickly became known for its excellent work and won many awards.
Later, the company changed its name to Weese Langley Weese. They became famous for designing buildings for non-profit groups and schools. Their work often focused on respecting and preserving historical buildings and styles.
