Discovering Benchley's Past

Benchley has an interesting history. Many early settlers faced challenges.

What Was the Runaway Scrape?

Between September 1835 and April 1836, many people left Benchley. This event was part of something called the "Runaway Scrape." During this time, many Texans moved away from their homes. They were trying to escape from the Mexican Army. This happened during the Texas Revolution.

How Did Residents Protect Their Horses?

In the 1840s, a strange event happened in Benchley. Some people pretended to be preachers. While one person gave a sermon, others tried to steal horses. The people of Benchley quickly went after them. They managed to get their horses back. This shows how important their animals were to them.

Benchley's Community Life
