Bender's Restaurant: A Historic Place
Canton grew a lot around the year 1900. Guy Tilden was a famous architect in the city then. He designed the first part of Bender's building in 1899. It was first called the Belmont Buffet.
How It Started
The Bender's company bought the Belmont Buffet in 1908. Soon after, they bought two buildings right next door. The restaurant quickly took over these new spaces. Before long, Bender's Restaurant was much bigger. It replaced a stable for horses and a barbershop. No big changes have been made to the building since 1908. By 1918, Bender's was so well-known that a travel guide, the Automobile Blue Book, suggested it to people traveling from other states.
What Makes It Special?
Bender's Restaurant is two stories tall. The main part is made of brick on a strong stone foundation. The parts added in 1908 are made of smooth stone and brick. The front of Bender's has three main sections. Many of the outside windows are made of beautiful stained glass. There isn't much other fancy decoration on the outside.
Inside, you'll see lots of wooden panels. Many original features are still there. These include a separate entrance just for women. There's also marble on the lower walls. The ceilings have special square patterns with visible beams. The floors are covered in tiles. You can also see a group of murals painted by a German artist who traveled around.
A Recognized Landmark
In 1987, Bender's Restaurant was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This means it's recognized as an important historic site. It qualified because of its special architecture. Bender's was one of five buildings in Canton designed by Guy Tilden that were added to the Register at the same time. Other buildings like the Harry E. Fife House and the Weber Dental Manufacturing Company are also still on the Register.
