Bengal, Missouri facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Bengal was once a small, quiet place in Christian County, Missouri. It was what people call an unincorporated community. This means it wasn't officially a town or city with its own local government. Instead, it was just a group of homes and maybe a few buildings in the countryside. Today, Bengal no longer exists as a recognized community.

Where Was Bengal Located?

Bengal was situated in the southern part of Missouri. It was found along a small stream called Tory Creek. This location was about one mile south of another place called Montague.

If you traveled southwest from Bengal for about three miles, you would reach Ponce de Leon. Another community, Spokane, was located about 2.5 miles to the south-southeast. Bengal was part of an area known as South Galloway Township. The land where Bengal once stood is about 1,243 feet above sea level.

A Look at Bengal's History

Bengal had a post office that opened in 1897. A post office is where people send and receive mail. Having a post office was a big deal for small communities back then. It often meant the place was growing and had enough people to need its own mail service.

However, the post office in Bengal didn't stay open for very long. It closed its doors in 1918. This often happens when a community's population shrinks, or people move to bigger towns nearby. No one is quite sure how Bengal got its name. The reason behind it remains a mystery today.
