Benito is a small, quiet place in Harlan County, Kentucky. It is an unincorporated community, which means it does not have its own local government. Benito was once a busy coal camp, a place where miners and their families lived. It is located along the Clover Fork, a stream, and is close to the city of Evarts. You can find Benito between two other small communities, Gano and Highsplint.

Benito was created by the Benito Mining Company. This company was likely involved in mining coal, which was a very important industry in Kentucky.

Early Services and Transport

In 1929, Benito got its own post office. This post office also served the nearby community of Gano. James Bennett was the first postmaster, the person in charge of the post office. However, the post office closed just over a decade later, in 1940.

The Louisville and Nashville Railroad had train tracks running through Benito. This railroad was very important for moving coal and supplies in and out of the community.

Community Life and Population

At its busiest time, the communities of Gano and Benito together had about 300 people living there. This shows that these small coal camps could be quite active places when the mining industry was strong.
