Benjamin Elliott Crane (born December 19, 1835 – died January 15, 1885) was an important businessman. He lived in Atlanta, Georgia, United States, after the American Civil War. He helped rebuild the city and make it a strong business center.

Benjamin Crane: A Leader in Atlanta

Benjamin Crane was born in Athens, Georgia. He went to the University of Georgia and finished his studies in 1854. After that, he studied civil engineering in Troy, New York. This means he learned how to design and build things like roads and bridges.

Serving During the Civil War

During the American Civil War, Benjamin Crane joined Cobb's Legion. In 1863, he became a major. He worked as a quartermaster. A quartermaster is like a manager who makes sure soldiers have enough food, supplies, and equipment.

Moving to Atlanta

In 1865, after the war ended, Benjamin Crane moved to Atlanta. At that time, the city was still recovering. Much of it had been burned and destroyed during the war. He helped rebuild Atlanta and make it a busy place again.

On February 21, 1867, he married Sarah Clayton.

A Key Business Leader

Benjamin Crane was a natural leader in the business world. He played a big part in making the Atlanta Chamber of Commerce very successful. The Chamber of Commerce is a group of businesses that work together to help their city grow and create jobs.
