The Benjamin Flagg House is a very old and important house in Worcester, Massachusetts. It was built around 1717, making it the oldest building in the city! Many generations of the Flagg family lived here. One famous resident was Captain Benjamin Flagg, who fought in the American Revolutionary War. This historic house was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 because of its special history.

About the Flagg House

The Benjamin Flagg House stands on a unique, triangle-shaped piece of land. It is located on the east side of Worcester. Plantation Street is on one side, and Ingleside Avenue is on the other.

What the House Looks Like

This house is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of wood and has a classic design. The roof slopes down on two sides, which is called a side-gable roof. A big chimney sits right in the middle of the house. The outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboard siding.

The front of the house faces west toward Plantation Street. It has three sections, or "bays," across the front. The main door is in the center. It has simple decorations around it. Above the door, there is a small window with four panes of glass. This is called a transom window.

Its Long History

People believe the house was built around 1718. This was when Benjamin Flagg II bought a large area of land here. We don't know for sure how much of the house is from his original building. Some parts might have been changed later on.

A book called Reminiscences by Caleb Wall tells us more. Benjamin Flagg II's son, also named Benjamin, was a brave soldier. He was a captain in the local militia. This group of citizen soldiers marched to Lexington on April 18, 1775. This was during the start of the American Revolutionary War.

Captain Flagg later became a Colonel in the Revolutionary War. He also held important jobs in the town of Worcester. He lived on Plantation Street on a large farm of 150 acres. Colonel Flagg passed away in Worcester on October 8, 1818, at 95 years old. The Flagg family owned the house until 1850, when it was sold to new owners.
