His family was also connected to famous people like James Haughton, a social reformer, and Samuel Haughton, a scientist. Benjamin himself was the head of a company in Cork called Haughton's, which sold timber (wood) and iron. He also supported the local YMCA, an organization that helps young people.

Benjamin Haughton's Role in Irish History

Working for Peace During the War

During the Irish War of Independence, a time when Ireland was fighting for its freedom, Benjamin Haughton played a part in trying to bring peace. He worked with an organization called the Irish White Cross, which helped people affected by the conflict. He was also part of a group of people from Southern Ireland who wanted to find a peaceful solution with Sinn Féin, a major Irish political party, before the fighting stopped in 1921. This effort was about trying to talk and find common ground.

Becoming a Senator

After Ireland gained more independence and the Constitution of the Irish Free State was created in 1922, a new government was formed. The leader at the time, W. T. Cosgrave, who was like the Prime Minister, chose 30 people to be the first members of the Seanad Éireann. Benjamin Haughton was one of these chosen people.

How Senators Were Chosen

The first 60 senators were divided into two groups of 15 by a lottery (like drawing names from a hat). One group served for six years, and the other for twelve years. Benjamin Haughton drew a six-year term, meaning he served as a senator until 1928.

Leaving the Seanad

Benjamin Haughton tried to keep his seat in the Seanad in the 1928 election, but he was not re-elected. He was married to Margaret Elizabeth Goodbody, and they had five children together.
