History of the Benjamin Williams House

Benjamin O. Williams helped start the town of Owosso in 1836. He did this with his brother, Alfred. Alfred's own house is also nearby. The brothers worked hard to bring new people and businesses to the area.

Benjamin Williams traveled a lot to find people to invest in the new town. When he was in Owosso, he lived in temporary places. But in 1838, he built this small house. It was his first permanent home in the town he helped create. The house was originally on West Oliver Street. It was moved to its current spot on Ball Street after 1868.

Later, the house became home to Henry H. Daniels. He was a local artist and craftsperson. Henry bought the house from Benjamin Williams before 1876. Henry's daughter, Nina, and her husband, John Dettwiler, also lived there.

What Does the Benjamin Williams House Look Like?

The Benjamin Williams House is a small, L-shaped building. It is made of wood and has a style called Greek Revival. This style was popular a long time ago. The house was built using hand-cut wooden beams. Its outside walls are covered with overlapping wooden boards called clapboard.

The main part of the house has two sections and two stories. It has windows placed evenly. The roofline has a special design called a corniceline with returns. The side part of the house is one story high. It has a front that is set back a bit. The windows have two panes of glass, one above the other. Above the front door, there is an original glass window called a transom. There is also a roof that sticks out like a porch. It is held up by columns and a full entablature, which is a fancy decorative part.
