The Seppelt Family Arrives
Benno Seppelt's family came to South Australia in 1850. His father, Joseph Ernst Seppelt, started a winery called Seppeltsfield. Sadly, Joseph died when the business was still quite new.
Benno Takes Over
Benno Seppelt, who had studied chemistry, took over the family winery when his father passed away. He was a very good manager and had many new ideas. He helped the business grow a lot.
Growing the Business
Benno Seppelt expanded the land where grapes were grown. He also made sure the winery produced different kinds of drinks. In 1870, the business was making many "syrups, cordials, and spirits."
In 1877, Benno installed a large new machine for making spirits. This machine was very tall, about 10.5 meters (35 feet) high! It was built to his own design and could make a lot of product each day. The winery even had its own chemistry lab for Benno to do his experiments.
The business changed its name over time. From 1876, it was known as B. Seppelt & Sons. In 1902, it became B. Seppelt & Sons Ltd.
Benno Seppelt retired in 1916. His son, Oscar Seppelt, then became the head of the company.
