What is the Bergh–Stoutenburgh House?
This house was built a long time ago, even before the American Revolutionary War. It's a one-story building made mostly of stone. It has a unique roof style called a gambrel roof, which is covered with slate. Two brick chimneys stick up from the roof.
A Look at the House's Design
The outside walls are made of rough, natural stones. The ends of the roof, called gables, are covered with wooden boards. There are also two small wooden sections that stick out from the back and side of the house. A special arched doorway on the south side leads to the cellar. The main front door has a small, flat-roofed porch.
How Old is the House?
The Bergh–Stoutenburgh House has a rich history. It was built sometime between 1771 and 1780. This means it was standing during the American Revolutionary War!
Early Owners and Builders
The land where the house stands was once owned by Christian Bergh. His son, John Bergh, inherited the land. John and his brother-in-law, Martin Dop, built houses on this property. Their houses even appeared on a map made between 1778 and 1780. This map was drawn by Robert Erskine, who was a surveyor for the Continental Army.
From Family Home to Historic Site
In 1788, John Bergh sold a large part of his land to Jacobus Stoutenburgh II. Later, Jacobus's daughter, Margaret, inherited the property. The house remained a family home for many years. It was used as a residence throughout the 1800s and for much of the 1900s. In 1972, the Bergh–Stoutenburgh House was added to the National Register of Historic Places. This list recognizes buildings that are important to American history. It was the very first property in Hyde Park to get this special recognition on its own.
What is it Used For Today?
After being a home for so long, the house was later changed to be used for other purposes. At one point, it became a Japanese restaurant called Edo Sushi. The restaurant changed the inside of the house to fit Japanese dining styles. However, some of the original parts of the house, like the fireplace, were kept. Today, as mentioned, it serves as an office for a state senator.
