Discovering the Bergmann Hotel
The Bergmann Hotel was built a long time ago. It opened its doors on December 16, 1913. For many years, it served as a home for people working in Juneau. The hotel has seen many changes over the decades. It finally closed its doors on March 10, 2017.
The Vision of Marie Bergmann
The hotel was built by a woman named Marie E. Bergmann. She wanted to create a welcoming place for local miners. Marie Bergmann moved to Juneau in 1896. She had lived in Seattle before coming to Alaska.
Marie was a true pioneer in Alaska before it became a state. She was already well-known in the hotel business in Juneau. Besides working in hotels, she also worked as a nurse. Marie first dreamed of building a much bigger and fancier hotel. However, she could not find enough investors or money. So, she had to make her plans a bit smaller.
Building a Home for Miners
Even though her plans changed, Marie still built a great hotel. The Bergmann Hotel officially opened its doors in December 1913. Marie Bergmann continued to run the hotel. Sadly, she passed away in 1918. Her hotel continued to be an important part of Juneau.
In 1978, the building was officially added to the National Register of Historic Places. This honor recognized its importance to the history of Alaska.
Life at the Hotel
Even though it was called a hotel, the Bergmann mostly provided homes for miners. Most people rented rooms by the week or month. The rooms at the Bergmann Hotel did not have their own kitchens. However, each room did have a sink.
Guests shared other facilities. Restrooms, showers, and laundry rooms were available to everyone. Each floor had three toilets and three shower facilities. There were also laundry and microwave facilities on every floor. From 2001, Camilla Barrett and James M. Barrett owned the hotel. They owned it until 2017.
