Berhane Adere Debala (born on July 21, 1973) is a famous long-distance runner from Ethiopia. She was amazing at races like the 10,000 metres and half marathon. Berhane won many gold and silver medals during her career.

She won a gold medal in the 10,000 meters at the 2003 World Championships in Athletics. She also earned silver medals in the same event in 2001 and 2005. Berhane was also a world champion in the half marathon in 2002. She won the famous Chicago Marathon twice, in 2006 and 2007.

Berhane once held world records for indoor running. She set records for the 3,000 meters in 2002 and the 5,000 meters in 2004. Her 3,000-meter record was the first time a woman ran that fast indoors. It was also the first indoor world record for an Ethiopian woman in a distance race.

Today, Berhane works with UNICEF. She is a goodwill ambassador who helps promote girls' education around the world.

Berhane Adere's Running Career

Berhane Adere was a top athlete in long-distance running. She set an African record for the 10,000 metres in 2003. This was at the World Championships where she won gold. Her record was later broken in 2008 by another Ethiopian runner, Tirunesh Dibaba.

Marathon and Half Marathon Success

Berhane showed her strength in longer races too. She won the 2006 Chicago Marathon with her fastest time ever, 2 hours, 20 minutes, and 42 seconds. She won the Chicago Marathon again in 2007. In 2008, she also won the Dubai Marathon.

She continued to win big races. In 2007, she won the Ras Al Khaimah Half Marathon. In 2010, she ran the fastest ever half marathon by a woman on American soil. This was at the Rock 'n' Roll Mardi Gras Marathon. She finished in 1 hour, 7 minutes, and 52 seconds. This was also a world record for runners over 35 years old.

Later in 2010, she won the Great North Run in September. She completed the half marathon in 1 hour, 8 minutes, and 49 seconds. In 2012, she placed second at the Great Birmingham Run and third at the Great South Run.
