The Berkeley Apartments, also known as the Graystone Hotel after 1912, is a historic apartment hotel building. You can find it in Buffalo, in Erie County, New York. It's a special building because it was one of the first large, tall buildings ever built using a strong material called reinforced concrete.
A Look Back at the Berkeley Apartments
The Berkeley Apartments were built a long time ago, between 1894 and 1897. It was designed by a local architect named Carlton T. Strong and an engineer named Ernest L. Ransome. They made it look like buildings from the Italian Renaissance style, which is a classic and beautiful design.
This six-story building was very important. It even hosted visitors who came to the Pan-American Exposition in the early 1900s. This was a big fair that brought many people to Buffalo.
Over the years, the building faced some challenges. In the early 1990s, it became empty for a while. Later, in 2002, a company bought it, hoping to turn it into modern apartments. But during some work in 2003, part of the roof fell in, and the plans stopped.
The building sat quietly until 2013, when work started again. Now, the Berkeley Apartments are home to 42 new apartments. It was officially listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1987, recognizing its importance.
