Berkeley Mill Village is a historic district located in Cumberland, Rhode Island. It's a special area that has kept its old buildings and history safe. This village was built around a large textile mill, where fabric was made. It includes the mill buildings and homes for the people who worked there.

Exploring Berkeley Mill Village

Berkeley Mill Village is a unique place that shows us how people lived and worked in the past. It is found in Cumberland, Rhode Island. The village is generally located near Martin Street and Mendon Road. It is also close to railroad tracks and St. Joseph Cemetery.

A Village Built for Work

The entire village, including the mill and the houses, was built in 1872. A company called the Lonsdale Company created it. They built the mill to make textiles, which are types of cloth or fabric. The village grew up around the mill to house the workers.

Homes and Buildings

Most of the homes built in Berkeley Mill Village are two-story brick duplexes. A duplex is a building with two separate living spaces. This means two families could live in one building. Along Mendon Street, you can also see some beautiful Queen Anne Victorian houses. These homes often have fancy details and towers.

There is also an old church building on Mendon Street. It was built around 1892 in a style called Stick-style. Today, this building is used for other purposes, not as a church.

A Moment in History: The 1922 Strike

In 1922, the textile mills in Berkeley Mill Village faced a challenge. There was a large strike across New England. Workers were upset because their wages were going to be cut, and their work hours increased. Because of this, the mills in Berkeley had to temporarily close down.

A Protected Historic Place
