Bernard, Count of Cerdanya facts for kids
Bernard William (also known as Bernat Guillem in Catalan and Bernat Guilhem in Occitan) was an important ruler in the medieval period. He was a Count who governed two areas called counties: Berga (starting in 1094) and Cerdanya (starting in 1109).
Bernard William was the son of William I of Cerdanya and Sancha of Barcelona. When his father passed away in 1094, Bernard William became the Count of Berga. Later, in 1109, his brother William-Jordan died, and Bernard William then also became the Count of Cerdanya. This meant he ruled over both areas.
Becoming a Powerful Count
Bernard William's family was very important in the region. When he inherited Berga from his father, he took on the responsibility of leading that county. Years later, when his brother died, he gained even more power by becoming the Count of Cerdanya. This made him a significant figure among the rulers of his time.
Dealing with Other Rulers
In 1111, another ruler named Bernard III of Besalú died. This led to a disagreement about who should control the county of Besalú. Bernard William believed that Besalú, along with other areas like Fenollet and Vallespir, should be connected to Cerdanya. However, the powerful County of Barcelona wanted to take control of Besalú.
Bernard William eventually decided to give up his claim to these counties. He handed them over to his cousin and friend, Raymond Berengar III of Barcelona. This was a big decision that changed the map of the region.
The End of His Rule
Bernard William passed away in 1118. He did not have any children to inherit his titles. Because of this, the county of Cerdanya, which he had ruled, then became part of the County of Barcelona. This meant that Barcelona grew even larger and more powerful.
