Bernard Robert August Borggreve (born July 6, 1836, in Magdeburg – died April 5, 1914, in Bendorf) was an important German forestry scientist. He is well-known for creating a special way to cut trees called the "Borggreve method." This method helps forests grow in a healthy and natural way.

Bernard Borggreve's Life and Work

Bernard Borggreve studied at the Forestry Academy in Eberswalde. His teacher there was Julius Theodor Christian Ratzeburg. After that, he continued his studies at the University of Göttingen.

Early Career in Forestry

In 1864, Bernard Borggreve became the head of the Hohenlohe forestry service in Koschentin. Just two years later, he started teaching about forestry at the Agricultural Academy in Bonn-Poppelsdorf. From 1868, he taught classes in zoology (the study of animals) and botany (the study of plants) at the new Academy of Forestry in Hann. Münden.

Becoming a Forest Leader

In 1872, he was made the head forester in Zöckeritz, which is near Bitterfeld. Later, in 1879, he returned to Hann. Münden. This time, he was a professor and the director of the forest academy. In 1891, the Prussian Ministry of Agriculture appointed him as Oberforstmeister (a high-ranking forest official) in Wiesbaden.

Important Books and Writings

Bernard Borggreve also shared his knowledge through many books and articles. He was an editor for a journal called Forstlichen Blätter with Julius Theodor Grunert. After Grunert passed away, Borggreve became the only editor. In 1871, he published a new version of a famous book called "Lehrbuch für Förster" by Georg Ludwig Hartig.

Here are some of his other important books:

  • Die Vogel-Fauna von Norddeutschland (1869) – This book was all about the different types of birds found in northern Germany.
  • Die forstabschätzung (1888) – This book explained how to measure and plan for how much wood a forest could produce. It also covered how to calculate the value of forests.
  • Die Verbreitung und wirtschaftliche Bedeutung der wichtigeren Waldbaumaren innerhalb Deutschlands (1888) – This work looked at where important forest trees grew in Germany. It also discussed how valuable they were for the economy.
  • Die holzzucht (1891) – This book was a guide for growing different types of wood. It was useful for both teaching and for managing forests.
