Who Was Bernard Cleary?
Bernard Cleary was born in a place called Mashteuiatsh, Quebec. This community is home to the Innu First Nation. Before he became a politician, Cleary had many different jobs. He worked as a businessman, a journalist, and even a professor. He was also a chief negotiator, which means he helped groups talk and find agreements.
Becoming a Member of Parliament
In 2004, Bernard Cleary decided to run for election. He was elected to the House of Commons of Canada in the 2004 Canadian federal election. This is where Canada's laws are made. He represented the area called Louis-Saint-Laurent in Quebec.
Cleary was a member of the Bloc Québécois political party. This party mainly works to protect the interests of Quebec within Canada. As a Member of Parliament, he spoke up for his community. He was the Bloc Québécois's main spokesperson, or "critic," for Indigenous issues. This meant he watched over the work of the Minister of Crown–Indigenous Relations. This minister works with Indigenous peoples in Canada.
After Parliament
Bernard Cleary served in the House of Commons for one term. In the 2006 election, he ran again but was not re-elected. He was defeated by Josée Verner from the Conservative Party of Canada.
Cleary's election was a big moment for Indigenous people in Canada. He showed that Indigenous voices could be heard in the highest levels of government. His legacy continues to inspire many.
